Leadership is a concept that has been discussed for many years expanding into many different directions. Managers and businessmen can get confused as to what principles they should follow. Simply, good leaders seem to find ways of accomplishing their goals despite the difficulties they face. They have the ability to be “transformational leaders” who improve their surroundings and develop a shared vision of the future.
Burns a leading philosopher on leadership believes, “I define leadership as leaders inducing followers to act for certain goals that represent the values and the motivations-the wants and needs, the aspirations and expectations-of both leaders and followers.” In other words, leaders have the ability to align people’s (personal) work goals with that of the leaders. They are able to motivate and see from the perspective of others.
Transformational Leaders have the following characteristics (Homrig, 2006):
1. Trust develops between workers and leaders.
2. The leader inspires people to “buy” into concepts and goals by providing followers with challenges and meaning.
3. They develop and encourage creativity in their workplaces. People are allowed to make mistakes as long as they can are developing new ways of doing business.
Transformational leaders are needed for the future economy of the United States. A country where Caucasians, Hispanics and African Americans are to be the dominant group with divided loyalties it is important for leaders to get everyone working towards the same goals. This can be difficult as homogeneous societies with more easily motivated employees work together to “thrash” American interests in the international business community.
Therefore, leaders must be able to work better and be better than they ever were before. It is a time when Americans must reclaim their lost enthusiasm for exploration and success. Trudging to reform American business is difficult and heartfelt but necessary to secure future generations existence as world leaders.
