With the release of The Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft, many new features were introduced, many of which can mean more gold for your wallet and better items for your character. One of these features is the Mote. Motes are a new item that millions of players are flocking to find. These elemental items are similar in substance and value to Essences, a now nearly gone item used before the expansion. Motes themselves find various uses throughout the game, including creating Primals, a very important crafting element for end game purposes.
Motes themselves come in seven different varieties, one for each of the following: Fire Water, Air, Earth, Mana, Life and Shadow. These motes can all be turned into Primals when you have collected at least ten. For example if you have ten motes of Earth, you can sunder them into a Primal of Earth. Motes themselves are nearly useless. It is these Primals that are so valuable and sought after by the many professions in the game.
So, with so many people working feverishly to up their level to 375 and in need of Primals to do so, Auction House prices are at a premium and Mote farming is one of the most effective ways to make hundreds of gold in very little time.
Nagrand is probably your best bet for finding many of the motes you’ll need to put together a substantial supply of Primals for selling in the auction house. On the Elemental Plateau for example, you will find Wind, Fire, and Water Elementals all which drop their related Motes at a fairly rapid pace. Some people have reported making upwards of 400 gold an hour. The rate varies with the Auction House prices of course, but for those willing to put in the time, there is gold to be made.
For those with access to Netherstorm and the Ruins of Enkaat, look for Mana Wraiths to drop Motes of Mana and Rock Elementals for valuable Motes of Earth. The rate of drop is considered even a bit higher than in Nagrand, though these Primals sell for a hair less at auction. Another great place to look is Shadowmoon Valley at The Hand of Gul-dan. Here you’ll find Fire and Rock Elementals with your Motes of Earth and Fire.
Value is what most people are interested in though and the true value of motes comes after you have sundered them into Primals. Primals range in value depending on the demand of the auction house. Primals of Shadow and Earth are the least valuable, only selling for 2 to 5 gold per Primal in the auction house. However, those with Primals of Mana and water can make an upwards of 20 gold for each of their finds. Fire and Air pick up the most though as they are the hardest motes to gather, with each Primal selling for as much as 30 gold in the Auction house.
